Hikers Stumbled Upon A Dog In A Box, Then Realized Something Had Been Protecting Him…

Dogs are truly man’s best friend. And for most of us, they are not just considered as pets but also as a family member. After all, they grow old with you and your family. Sadly, there are other people who treat dogs just like objects and dispose of them whenever and wherever they want. Whatever their reasons, we’ll never understand, but it’s an inhumane way to treat such smart and loyal animals. If you show them, love, they will double that back.

Fortunately, there are kind-hearted people out there who stumble upon these abandoned dogs, and instead of leaving them that way, they give them the help they need. This story starts exactly like that, but soon after encountering the dog, the rescuers realize that he was not alone and had a guardian very close by. Let’s find out who it is.

10. What’s Inside The Box?

While enjoying a walk in their nearby woods, the rescuers came across a weird box in the middle of nowhere. As they approached it, they see a tired dog lying inside on a blanket trying to get warm. He had no food, no water, and no roof to shield him from the heat and rain. But most importantly, there was clearly no owner nearby. But it wasn’t long before the realized the dog wasn’t alone.

The rescuers found the dog in an area called Dowdy’s Ferry in Dallas, Texas. Despite being just 15 minutes away from the nearby town, this place was very different. Sadly, this area is known for being a location where animals are often abandoned. It’s quiet and isolated enough so that they won’t be seen, but close enough to town that their pet will eventually and hopefully be rescued by a kind soul.

9. The Underdog Project

The woodlands have become a popular location to dump unwanted belongings like old sofas, broken refrigerators, and unfortunately including unloved pets. Sadly, it had got to the point where finding an abandoned dog in the woods or on the side of the road wasn’t uncommon. It was too much, and enough was enough. So one local woman named Leslie Ysuhuaylas started a non-profit organization with several other volunteers to fight the problem. The organization was known as The Underdog Project, and it wasn’t long before they stumbled upon the dog in the box.

Interestingly, this was not the first time Leslie and her team had encountered this abandoned dog. The stray pup had overflowing energy during their previous encounter that it ran away quickly from the rescuers, obviously fearing human contact. Of course, Leslie wouldn’t allow leaving the dog without giving any help so she left out the box and blankets for the pup which she later named Benny along with some nutritious food he could munch on.

8. Cold and Alone

Benny, the abandoned pup, was a beautiful, Sharpei mix, estimated to be no older than two-years-old. Benny was extremely fortunate that Leslie had finally been able to track him down. The temperature in the area had dropped to below 20 degrees that day, and Benny was obviously warming himself in the box to stay warm. Which means Benny remained still enough for the rescuers to finally approach him.

As Leslie approached Benny for the first time, it was clear why the pup wasn’t running away. He was too weak and malnourished to move. Not to mention the weather was freezing, and those blankets barely kept Benny warm on this cold day. But thankfully he was alive, although, you would wonder if he would have made it through the cold night if Leslie didn’t find him before that.

7. Benny Was in Pain

Talking to animal and wildlife news website, The Dodo, Leslie remembered the moment she saw the abandoned pup, and at that very instant, she immediately realized something was not right. Leslie said, “I realized he could barely move his body. All he did was raise his head a little. He had completely given up.” But, a lack of energy wasn’t Benny’s only problem. As she moved closer, she noticed something very worrying about the dog’s face.

The moment she saw Benny’s face, it was obvious he wasn’t just malnourished, but also badly wounded. Benny needed immediate attention. Not only was Benny’s face swollen and in pain, but he was also suffering from what a deep cut on his leg. Fortunately, Leslie and her team soon realized that Benny wasn’t alone. Who, or what, then came out of the trees?

6. Benny’s Companion

Out from the trees came this tired, chocolate-coloured Labrador. Although it was sad to find another stray dog, Leslie was comforted by the fact that Benny had not been alone. As the new dog approached the team, Leslie was instantly concerned with the how the new dog would react to humans around Benny. Keeping a close eye on the new dog, they calmly attended to Benny.

The Labrador was estimated to be around one-year-old and refused to leave Benny’s side. It was obvious that this mysterious dog was Benny’s buddy. Leslie explained, “She watched everything from afar, not leaving the area, just staring at her friend.” The rescue team soon named her Betty, but like her, they were extremely concerned with Benny’s health. They must work quickly to save his life.

5. Finally Rescued

Betty’s cry for attention would have to wait. It was wonderful news to see that she looked healthy, but Benny needed to see a veterinary immediately. So Benny was rushed to a nearby emergency clinic, where vets were able to identify the actual measure of his condition and injuries. Although unsurprising, Leslie was told that the laceration on his leg was deep, and critical enough to result in a bone infection.

However, while Benny was receiving treatment, the rest of The Underdog Project team returned to Dowdy’s Ferry to check out Betty. Betty had not moved from the roadside where Benny was taken away. Without any issues, they were able to approach Betty and rescue her as well. But what would happen to both dogs? And would Betty and Benny see each other again?

4. No Dog Gets Left Behind

The dogs needed a home, but it seemed harsh to separate them. The Underdog Project immediately put out an emergency call to the Rescue Dogs Rock NYC (RDRNYC). The RDRNYC are honored for helping dogs in the most desperate situations. Their Facebook page appropriately says what they do, “don’t leave dogs behind…ever.” They responded, and were happy to take both Betty and Benny.

Despite the good news that both dogs would be given help and a new home, Benny was far from perfect health. The RDRNYC posted in a January 2017 Facebook post that Benny was still in a critical condition, “Benny is on an IV as he is completely dehydrated, weak and starved. X-rays were taken of Benny’s leg and chest. His head is very swollen, and the medical staff are continuing to run tests to figure out why.”

3. Benny’s Vet Bill

The RDRNYC shared another post reflecting on how Benny came to be in such a heartbreaking condition; “Our hearts break. Thinking about Benny day after day, night after night in the cold, in pain, living in this box”. The sickening treatment Benny had received from his previous owners had taken its toll on Benny, and it’s hard to believe that anybody could ever treat an animal in such a way. The extent of Benny’s injuries is summed up in this $2056 bill!

There’s no doubt Benny needed the surgery, and the RDRNYC certainly wasn’t going to deny him the treatment he needed. And things were only going to get worse. Benny’s health complications and injuries were not fixed overnight. He needed ongoing treatment and medication to ease his pain. All-in-all, that $2056 bill was soon over $3000! To cover the bills, they were forced to appeal for financial assistance.

2. New Lives

However, as any dog owner would tell you, despite all the pain, abandonment and suffering, Benny’s incredible spirit refused to be discouraged. Leslie told The Dodo that Benny still loves all the attention; “Benny is still friendly, loving [and] loves toys. He doesn’t mind being touched and cleaned up. He’s a regular dog.” As for Betty, the RDRNYC described the protective pup as sweet and gentle. Who wouldn’t want these two dogs in their lives?!

The Dodo also spoke with RDRNYC co-founder Stacey Silverstein about the future of these two amazing dogs. Silverstein said, “We plan to bring Benny and Betty up to New York as soon as they can travel so that they can be adopted, We promise to give Betty the life she was always meant to have, one where she will be a cherished and a beloved family member.” It’s comforting to know groups like the RDRNYC and The Underdog Project are there for dogs that have been abandoned and abused.

1. A Bright Future

Despite being still very early on in Benny’s recovery and their adoption process, the dogs have a lot to look forward to now that they’re finally out of that cold woods. Let’s hope both of these dogs can find a home together, and take a moment to thank both the RDRNYC and The Underdog Project for all their amazing work saving the dogs owners have abandoned. Benny and Betty deserve the absolute best, and a loving family who love them as much as they love each other.

How sad it is to hear how these sweet and gentle dogs have been abandoned and left to die. But thankfully, their situation turned around and hope was in their future. It wouldn’t be hard for these loving dogs to get adopted as they are easy to live with.

We’re just hoping that Benny would recover to full health soon so he can move forward with his life. Thanks to organizations like The Underdog Project and RDRNYC, no dog gets left behind.
